Sam Lavelle was the Conn officer on the Alpha Shift. He was very goal oriented and wanted a promotion more than anything. In 2370 he was up for operation officer position competing with Sito Jaxa.
Since he didn’t get along that well with Riker it looked that Sito would get the promotion. He had an immense amount of respect for the commander and always tried to get on his good side. Lavelle got promoted because Sito mysteriously disappeared. His friends told him that Sito would have been happy and the best way to honor her was to excel in his position.

Adventure and exploration, not to mention starships were Jean-Luc’s biggest dreams as a child. He even built models of Starships as a child. The Phoenix, the first warp capable ship made by Zephram Cochrane, had his admiration.
Jean-Luc caused some trouble amongst his family when he joined Starfleet. Although failing his first entrance exam, he succeeded the second time around. He became one of the most outstanding cadets in the academy. Boothby, the groundskeeper helped Picard throughout his years at the academy.
